Communicating Through the Purchase of Online Flowers

While we are familiar with flower arrangements as congratulations, sentiments of sympathy, or birthday gifts, much of the significance of floral meaning has been lost. Once used to communicate a host of intentions, the modern flower delivery generally signifies only that the recipient is a fortunate and loved person. Although the meaning behind the different color of popular flowers, such as roses, is generally well known, the importance of most other blooms has been lost.

Tussy-mussies, or small bouquets used by women to mask the terrible odors abundant in Victorian times, were carried and sniffed to abate the reek of city life. These compact deodorizers evolved into symbols of friendship, love, and more. Often accompanied by small cards that bore a personal inscription, the combination of blossoms found in the bouquet would support the writing in meaning. For example, a courtship bouquet might contain blue violets for fidelity, white heather to make wishes come true, and magenta zinnias for constancy.

For a man to arrange a flower delivery to a woman indicates affection on some level, but how might he communicate a deeper emotion? Through his choice of flowers, that man could indicate an enduring and lasting love, or express a platonic feeling.

Roses, long hailed as the romantic favorite of the masses, are a flower whose colors greatly signifies different meanings. Yellow blooms indicate friendship, white indicate pure and chaste love, and red flowers indicate true love. Similarly, orange flowers indicate passion and pink indicates grace or gratitude. Flower arrangements that combine red and white express unity and oneness.

The hyacinth, a bloom whose beauty is immortalized in Greek myth, also conveys a multitude of meaning depending on its color. Purple hyacinth in a bouquet indicated sorrow or regret for ones actions; yellow indicated jealousy, and blue, the color long-associated with the sacred, indicated constancy. Pansies signified that the giver was occupied by thoughts of the recipient, and oleander blossoms in a flower delivery warned the recipient to be cautious. Begonia also indicated that the recipient should be wary.

Some caution must be used concerning these floral sentiments, however, as the meanings sometimes shifted even from dictionary to dictionary. For example, flower arrangements containing one translation of the vivid hydrangea could express an appreciation for being understanding or… condemn a person as frigid. Lilies and carnations are two other flowers that have an array of meanings, depending on color and translation.

Some flower delivery services are trying to revitalize these connotations. When purchasing online flowers, some sites offer “translations” of flower meanings. This allows the modern person to create unique bouquets that offer both beautiful flower arrangements and personalized messages for the recipient. This permits the purchaser to create a special bouquet or gift basket that is exclusively tailored to the recipient.

Although the most celebrated symbol of love, the rose is not the only plant that indicates abiding love. With the encouragement of florists, we could see a resurgence of the once-popular transmittal of hidden messages in flowers.
